What Determines The Price Of Lawn Mowing?

There is no “one size fits all” lawn mowing service cost for lawn mowing and gardening services, but there are some factors that you can consider to help you understand your local lawn care prices.

Lawn Size & Shape

The size of your lawn is a major factor in determining the total cost of cutting your grass. Large lawns and steep lawns take longer to mow, and therefore higher lawn mowing rates are charged. Odd-shaped lawns may also take additional time. If you have a corner block, you will pay a lot more for your lawn mowing service compared to your neighbours due to the extra time taken to mow the nature strip.

Yard Features

Features like trees, gardens, garden edging, footpaths, pavers set into the grass, cubby houses, fences, and sheds take time to edge and mow around and attract a higher rate. You may also be charged an additional cost if pet waste, toys and hoses need to be picked up before your lawn mowing service can start.

Length of Grass

Long grass needs a lot of time to get into good shape. For best results, it may need whipper snipping first, and/or need the grass cut two or three times with a lawn mower to get a neat and tidy finish.

In warmer climates such as Brisbane, the grass growing season lasts most of the year. Depending on how much water and fertiliser your lawn has had, in Summer months your lawn may need fortnightly or weekly mowing to prevent if getting too long. In Autumn and Spring, fortnightly mowing will keep your lawn looking good. Then, mowing every three to four weeks in the winter months will suffice.

Access to your backyard

Many houses in new estates have narrow access to back yards. Often this means our wide mowers won’t fit through gates and we need to use a narrow mower, which takes longer to mow.

Type of Grass

Buffalo grasses and some weeds are denser and take more effort to push a mower through. This means more time, more lawn clippings and a higher price to charge for lawn mowing.

Green Waste Removal

Unless you tell us otherwise, we will factor in the removal of grass clippings, tip fees, and travel time to and from the tip into your lawn mowing price. If you want us to leave your lawn clippings on your property, your lawn mowing cost will be lower.

Frequency

If we are mowing your lawn weekly or fortnightly, the average price to get your lawn mowed will be less than someone that needs a one-time mow.

This is because we will speak with you on the phone and visit your property to give you a free quote, and we need to set you up in our payment system. The cost of doing these things is absorbed by us over time for regular lawn mowing customers. But for customers that require one-off lawn care services, these costs are passed on to you.

Business Overhead Costs

War Horse Mowing is a fully insured, professional lawn mowing service. For us to stay in business, a portion of your lawn mowing service cost contributes to our overhead costs:

    • Labour costs, superannuation and Work Cover insurance for employees

    • Tax (income tax and GST)

    • Vehicle and trailer expenses (petrol, rego, maintenance, insurance, repairs, eventual replacement)

    • Equipment repairs and replacement

    • Staff training expenses

    • Petrol for lawn mowing and gardening equipment

    • Various business insurances

    • Advertising

    • Accounting and administration

    • Uniforms and safety equipment

  • Transporting your green waste to an approved waste management facility (commercial dumping fees apply)
A Note About GST – GST is a cost every business that has a turnover of more than $75,000 must charge. Businesses don’t get to keep the GST component of your mowing service fee.  They must give the GST amount on your invoice back to the government.

Additional Services

If you require additional services such as hedge trimming, light tree trimming, weed control, or a general garden clean-up, this is done at an additional cost. However, it is usually cheaper for you to get additional services done at the same time as your mowing service as this saves us another trip back to your property.

Travel Time

Some lawn care companies will charge you extra for drive time if you live further away from their regular route. To keep costs down for our customers, we service properties in the same area on the same day each mowing cycle.

Lawn Mowing Prices in Brisbane

Most lawn mowing businesses in Brisbane will quote you a flat fee rather than an hourly rate. Lawn mowing rates should be agreed upon before service begins, and you should know what is included.

Our lawn mowing service includes the following unless agreed with our customers in advance:

    • Edge trimming and whipper-snipping

    • Lawn mowing, including catching the clippings

    • Removal of green waste

    • Blowing clippings and leaves off all hard surfaces

It’s impossible to give an accurate estimate without inspecting your yard, although it may be possible to give you an approximate cost based on the information you give us over the phone and photos of your yard.

Remember, there are many factors to take into consideration when quoting on a lawn mowing service – scroll up to revise these. Listed below is the average lawn mowing cost for various sized yards in Brisbane:

Up to 450M2 $65 – $90

Consider More Than Lawn Mowing Rates

Society conditions us to be attracted to lower rates, but you need to consider more than cost when choosing a lawn care business. It’s not worth saving a few dollars if you are unhappy with the standard of work, or the company has poor communication or doesn’t show up. Worse still, if something happens, such as a stone flying up and breaking a window, will your lawn care provider stick around to manage and pay for the replacement?

It’s a good idea to choose a lawn mowing contractor based on your answers to these questions:

    • Do you feel comfortable around the contractor?

    • Do they seem interested in doing your job, listen to what you want and offer suggestions?

    • Can you trust this lawn mowing company to turn up on time and do a good job?

    • Are they fully insured?

    • Is their vehicle and equipment well maintained?

    • Are they comfortable around your pets and treat them kindly?

    • Is the quote reasonable?
